What Is Bodily Injury Liability?

Bodily Injury Liability is a form of auto insurance coverage that may pay for another person's physical injuries when the insured driver caused a covered crash. The coverage can address injury-related losses, subject to the policy's terms, exclusions, and available limit. It does not insure the at-fault driver's own injuries.

Bodily Injury Liability coverage applies when an insured driver is legally responsible for a covered collision that injures another person. The injured person may seek payment for losses connected to the injury, such as medical treatment, lost income, or pain and suffering. The insurer reviews the claim under the policy language.

Coverage does not automatically decide who caused the crash or how much an injury claim is worth. Fault evidence, medical records, statements, and the policy terms can affect the claim. The available policy limit also sets a boundary on what the insurer may pay under that coverage. Liability insurance differs from uninsured motorist coverage, which may apply when the responsible driver lacks usable liability insurance.
